philips is currently designing new OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) for the mass market named
lumiblade. you may recall seeing the lumiblade panels in random international’s lighting installation at last
month’s milan design week. digging deeper, we discovered that philips will be one of the first manufactures
to bring OLEDs to the mass market. OLED’s are an example of solid-state lighting that produces light
using semiconductors. in addition to energy efficiency, OLEDs have a number of advantages over
incandescent lighting. also, OLEDs are different from leds because they are flat panels rather than small
bulbs. they can also be made into different shapes and a wider, more natural colour range. these advances
in the field make many believe that OLEDs will soon make a big splash, potentially stealing ground from
compact fluorescents.
