retro calculators go digital

retro calculators go digital

hewlett packard recently released a series of three vintage calculators as applications for the apple iphone.
the new applications feature replicas of the HP 12c, HP 12c platinum and HP 15c. each program mimics
the layout of the original device and features all the original functionality. when the phone is turned in
vertical mode the calculator condenses into a smaller version of the designs. touching the HP logo activates
the phone to display a faux back to the calculator, proving a 3-d aspect to the virtual applications.
the analog to digital cross over created by the calculators is very unique and could be the beginning of
many similar digital applications.

I like the design and implementation, but the price seems high given the pricing of other apps.

I continue to find it interesting what apple will allow/disallow in the store. It seems completely arbitrary. I don't object to this app, but the app store terms of use clearly state "no code emulators" which this app, by it's own description, is.

@rob

Its not a code emulator, the buttons are just doing simliar functions to what they did on the orginal calculator.

No way would HP waste the time programing a emulation of the 12c or 15c chip when they could simpily do the same function with C programming (which is easier and will produce the same results)

This is a graphical interface emulator, allowing short cuts to math functions that C already has built in by the same fashion as the 12c and 15c calculators it is not emulating the code (rather the chip) of the calculators.

that said, even more of a reason that they apps are WAY overpriced...give them a few weeks, they will drop.
