IFA berlin 09 highlights – day 3

the IFA (internationale funkausstellung) show in berlin is the european equivalent of CES.
the trade show features consumer electronics, home appliances and almost everything in
between. it runs from september 4 to 9, 2009.


axana 2000 gioel steam cleaner has a flexible design that allows user to clean almost any surface. the vacuum features a molecular separator to filter the air
and leave almost no dust.


perhaps not cutting edge, the body mouse by pat says now is a playful computer mouse that aims to make web surfing a ‘sensual experience’.


aiptek is the maker of this compact computer projector. the pocketcinema t20 notebook projector gives the power of projection in a tiny size.


axis technology’s food expiration date reminder solves the daily problem of wasting food because you forget about it or it expires. the device records your
food’s expiration date and reminds you 3 times to prevent food waste.



technotrade is the maker of this compact digital weather station. using led lights the device tells time, temperature (indoor and outdoor) and also the weather.


illycaffe’s good news espesso maker is special because of its built in radio. the machine makes your coffee and leaves you free to tune in your favourite
station while you wait.



the i-mu by iceberg technology is a vibro audio amplifier or ‘magic speaker’ that produces sound without a speaker. the device vibrates using crystal technology
and turns its environment into the speaker.

Okay, wow. Those mice have been around since the late 90s. That espresso machine looks like a children's toy. And a 'speaker' that's not actually a speaker and will let me experience all the tonal nuances of a sheet of plywood?! Yes please, sign me up!

Is it just me or have these highlights from the IFA been below par? So far they haven't really shown anything new and exciting. Some speakers that have a Mondrian print down the side, electronic drumkits or a barbie espresso maker aren't exactly pushing the boudaries of design. Give us more stuff like the LG washing machine which, you neglect to mention, will save energy and water and ultimately is advancing design in this field. If these are the highlights, i'm glad you've gone instead of me!
