kiran by d.light

d.light has designed the world's most affordable solar lantern which will available on market shortly.
the kiran solar lantern is designed specifically for families living in developing countries
who do not have access to a reliable source of electricity. their design is based on hundreds
of hours of research the company performed in rural india. the end result is a lamp which
provides up to 8 hours of bright light after a single day's charge. kiran is durable and weather resistant,
and has a low price point of 10USD, making it affordable for low-income families throughout
the developing world. d.light's hope is that kiran will replace kerosene lanterns on a broader scale.

I like the idea, have seen it presented in various forms over the past few years. BTW, the cost in USD is not present in the article, as I read it.
This, like other designs, places the light at a single point which radiates out, making distant edges of the reading material dramatically less lit than the print near the light (which is often over-lit). If the intention is allow people to learn from a book, it would seem a more appropriate solution would widen the beam and focus it in a adjustable rectangle so it could be used for any size book / area.
Good job on the (assumed) inexpensive integration.

This is where design should go. Intelligent, popular, benefit for everyone.

This idea is not new http://practicalactionconsulting.org/glowstar/ in the UK were doing this in 1999, however its a much more affordable version, NICE ONE.

This would be great even for campers or fishermen!

Im sorry, these people earn a day, and they can buy a kerosene lamp for about

This is just too expensive

We should be showing these people how to make inexpensive lamps themselves, that way they start their own business enterprise and benefit the local community at the same time

A more practical application for campers and the like....standard nalgene type bottle with a solar lantern cap. 3X expensive, but it but more functional. It would be really nice to see someone combine the solar panel cap idea with something along the lines of what a UV water sterilizing pens does. I bet people in developing countries would appreciate pathogen free water more than a lamp.

i lke this design becasue everything that is related to it , the tech , form , and function is integrated in a simple and sensitive way , the end users should be able to handle it with ease ..i also feel that this can be of great use to fishermen at sea also ..congrats kiran !!

Ten dollars is a lot, considering you can get solar garden lights for three dollars each retail. I'm sure you could make something just as good for well under five dollars, doubling or tripling the affordability.
