the crystal monster

the crystal monster is an LED light installation by designers beverly tang and tod e. kurt. the project is
made from over 400 sheets of laser-cut acrylic than have been wrapped with more than 240 feet of LED
tape. the project’s shape and structure was created by tang, while kurt created the lighting and electronic
components. measuring over 12 feet long, the crystal monster displays a series of light patterns on its
LED strips that flutter up and down its length. behind the scenes, the design is driven by a single arduino
brain that is connected to an infrared remote, so the lighting can be controlled from afar. the sculpture is
now installed in the corner window space of los angeles’ continental gallery.
