infographic money concept

tokyo based designer mac funamizu wondered what would happen if we rethought how coins were
designed with an infographic perspective. funamizu remarks on the merits and drawbacks of round
coins. while he acknowledges their benefits he wanted to see if they could be redesigned in a way that
was more universally understood. this would benefit travelers and people not accustomed to a specific
currency. the idea barrows from the world of graphic design, giving each coin an infographic form that
corresponds to pie charts. a one dollar coin is a circle, while a two dollar coin is two. the smaller
increments are segments of the circle or perforated to show what percentage they represents. while this
idea wouldn’t work very well in things like vending machines, it makes you think about alternative
ways we could design money.

25 and 50 cent pieces would poke your thigh if carried in a pants pocket.

You carry your keys in your pocket don't you?, much sharper and angular.
I think these are great, would work fine in vending machines as coins are not recognised primarily by their shape but by their electro-magnetic signature (why you can't use same shaped coins of a different currency and lower denomination), only thing they need is a bit more colour, anti counterfeiting measures and of course they have overlooked the crucial national identity, and cultural historical connotations coins have.

Very cool =D

I haven't seen something so intresting in a while...thanks for sharing it!

looks great, would totally get stuck in a vending machine though...

The concept is lost on me in the 1, 5, and 10 cent coins... the rest make cents ;)
will   01.21.10
brilliant.. perfect for a world currency move over euro
Pero   01.21.10
It would be really great coins like these. Dollar coins are really hard to be distinguished. In Brazil we have different sizes to every coin.
Silvia   01.21.10
love it.
francesca   01.21.10
Not sure how BIG these coins are relative to human hands...but there can be a circluar coin purse that these coins in fit in...like a pac dispenser or something!
V   01.21.10
Agree that the 1, 5, and 10 cent dot make sense but otherwise Super

Fantastic!

Cents are fantastic!
Dollars will be a problem in some cases.
But the whole idea is just right!

EDIT:

Quarter-, half- and two-dollars will be a problem.
