gebhard sengmuller is a vienna-based artist working in the field of media technology and the lead artist of
the very slow scan television which uses bubble wrap as a television display. very slow scan television
(VSSTV) was created in collaboration with jakob edlbacher, johannes obermayr, gerhard proksch-weilguni,
ludwig ertl and andreas konecky. this new televison format is based on an image transmission system used
by ham radio amateurs called slow scan television (SSTV). ‘VSSTV utilizes a plotter-like machine to fill
the individual bubbles with one of the three primary CRT colours, turning them into pixels on the VSSTV
screen’. the system mimics the way a CRT display mixes the three primary colours to create the different
hues, only much slower and in a physical form. the television display is so slow that it has a frame rate of
one image per day.

I just can not understand it.
Spend time, spend energy, and build some
ultra-sofisticated device for this?
I think the world needs usefull actions,
and I'm sure you have the skills to do it!!!
Good work!!

The world NEEDS art man, making art is useful in itself. Ask yourself this: does the world need my comment? You could have spent the time creating art...

I agree with scissors.....
the flippant way that energy, time and resources were used to make a very unremarkable point just makes me feel almost sick.....

I agree with Scissors. Spend time with "useful actions". I think that this technology generated for this VSCT is a creative solution to a manufactured problem, (How do I accomplish this). However, I could see this inspiring or evolving to solve other "useful" applications.
I hesitate to call it art, as it is a direct design solution with function being the main drive for form. Even if the function is seemingly to create an "artistic expression".
I'd like to hear if anyone has any suggested alternative applications for this process.

I'm on-board with scissors and k, this strikes me as a waste of energy and resources, although it does engender some interesting conversational points. So:
@Manolo
I believe the bigger questions here are: Why is this work considered art in the first place and if it is considered as such what qualifies it as such and what does it mean for art to have an autonomous machine that's slowly reproducing low-tech imagery through the medium of pigment and bubble wrap, i.e., how do you justify it's existence as art instead of a waste of time and resources? Just because it was made and someone calls it art?
