making music with sand

making music with sand

image: diego stocco

sound artist and musician diego stocco was moving around some bags of sand when he wondered if the
sound they made could be turned into music. the went out and bought some piezo film which is typically
used for industrial applications and taped them to his fingers and dragged it through the sand. the film
rubs against the morsels of sand and plays them like strings of an instrument. stocco recorded sounds
from the sand and mapped them onto a sampler as different instruments. using this tool the sand sounds
can be turned into a variety of songs and other compositions.
