the world’s largest solar powered boat will be placed in the water for its first trip on march 31st.
the planet solar boat measures 100 feet long and 50 feet wide and is covered in 5,300 square feet of
photovoltaic solar panels. the ship was built at the hdw shipyard in germany and will embark on a trip
around the world in 2011 covering over 25,000 miles. inside the boat has room for fifty passengers who
will be propelled from atop the catamaran base. the boat is the brainchild of raphael domjan who has
wanted to create an ultra-efficient boat since the eighties and has been exploring solar boats since around
2004.

Why can't they design those square solar panels to fit better, they look same for ages. The boat is cool anyway....

I agree, there is a lot of wasted surface area on top, but other than that, it looks like a well made boat, good lines and such...

Just wonder whether it wouldn't be better to have the solar panels (now that they can be made much lighter) in a wing that would increase the efficiency of solar gain. Will be interesting to follow its trip d;-)

Demand. More demand would create a market for customization. Right now, the work is focused on increasing the efficiency of the energy conversion. Messing with the geometry would be a distraction in the near term. Besides, what shape would you make? Triangles, trapezoids, etc.?
