otto is an electronic musical instrument developed by interaction designer luca de rosso. the circular
device allows users to manually splice audio sample beats in real-time using the otto interface and
a computer. the device is one the first instruments to allow beat slicing, which was developed using
digital techniques. while the same effect can be created digitally, otto was designed to allow the user
to feel as if the music is in their hands.  the device gives users audio feedback as well as visual feed
back through a pixel-like light display around the center of the circle. once a sample is loaded through
the computer, it is displayed on otto. the user can then directly manipulate the sounds using both hands
on the device, transforming the music to suit their needs.
