ralph tayler-webb: halcyon concept car

the halcyon concept car by ralph tayler-webb (reflex studio) was informed by the anatomy of an owl. the electric powered car has an aerodynamic structure with covered wheels and a tapering teardrop cabin which reduces air drag.

halcyon has a structure made from porous aluminum foam based on the owl’s hollow bones, which makes it surprisingly light for its generous volume. the foam also benefits from high impact and acoustic absorbency, keeping the occupants safe and (without) sound. the covered wheels also mimic the owl's feather covered legs which make it quiet in flight.

the model shown was created entirely out of hand in clay and then cast in resin to maintain an 'organic form with something instinctive, quite intangible, but very special'.
