bio-accessories by ben landau and brittany veitch

bio-accessories by australian designers ben landau and brittany veitch are a series
of wearable couture pieces which mask the unpleasant sights, sounds and scents of
a city in an attempt to bring some of the natural world back into civil living.

each piece of bio-accessories incorporates a living organism to accompany the wearer
throughout their day, creating a symbiotic relationship. the human tends to the animal
or plant, which reciprocates by bringing fresh air, light, greenery, privacy or birdsong
to the wearer. the pieces are representative of mobile natural environments, framed
within a fashionable alternative.

bio-accessories is an experimental speculation of responsive, functional, fashionable
and emotional craft within a city living context. it is currently on show as part of craft
victoria’s craft cubed exhibition at the city library for the month of august.

what an unspectacular waste of materials
anon   08.06.09
i heard it through the grapevine... good grief. what, me worry?
Faskingwhy   08.06.09
Oh my! These rural hippies always so detached with their macramé montessori naive bs.
Can't believe it.   08.06.09
I like to think that the first image is a tribute to Wilson from Home Improvement.
TheGadfly   08.06.09
Not really a fan of the top two; they seem just plain ridiculous. But the bottom two are just fabulous. The last one seems ready to wear, plausible and beautiful. The second to last seems goofy and yet lovely (my favorite combination for accessories).

To designboom editors:
Do you guys think this is an interest project?
gus   08.06.09
just what i always wanted... a plastic bird floating 8 inches beside my head...
almost interesting   08.06.09
LOVE IT! I am so tired of polluted environmental smell from exhaust to freakin Glade plug ins for god's sake!
Maggie Nelson   08.06.09
It's art guys. Function wasn't the main concern here. I believe it may be a statement on our disconnectedness with nature and the difficulty in mending the divide.
Jon   08.06.09
...
yeah, what Jon said!

The last piece is quite nice though one might get some stares for wearing it.
Lucy   08.06.09
whether or not it is an artistic statement, a line of absolutely non-wearable accessories made out of tangible materials is just lame especially in the particular way they framed their presentation to the public. the worst part is that each of these are "one-offs." The logic behind them is purely aesthetic and looking at them is more like looking at studies of the real project. i'd like to see the third and fourth iterations of the exact same things, once they've actually spent the time to refine them. had they photographed them in a high-fashion editorial the response for these particular items may have been different and better received.
e.lani   08.06.09
art? fart! i like the bird, though.....
the link to wilson made me laugh. thank you gadfly.
Faskingwhy   08.06.09
this designer is such an asshole.
eDawg   08.06.09
Hey I have an idea! I'll dig up a patch of dog-dirt from the park and strap it to my face - Whoa la!
MiniMolly   08.06.09
never have i heard such constructive criticism
good on you guys for getting something out there
nice work guys

and mini molly i think you're full of enough shit already...
scott   08.07.09
these are spectacular.
how quick some of you are to judge... what does the word 'couture' mean to you?

a wise and talented woman once told me "all it takes is one person to see art. from then on, it is art. forever."
amandapants   08.07.09
They've got the plants mouth cover for oxygen to breathe, and the bird in the ear to hear nature sounds, now they just need something in front of the eyes to see and something under the nose to smell, to complete the illusion.
markbaland   08.07.09
I'm with MiniMolly on this one. Except I'll sticky tape the dog dirt to my ears so I don't have to listen to people saying it is fantastic.
nonsence   08.07.09
clever guys who did this, especially for choosing this particular model, she's so pretty she would make a brick look nice if put on her head...
I like the birdy-thing most but I would have placed the cone more at the level of the ear, now it looks like the stick is growing out of her ear.
me   08.07.09
the 'face mask' would be also very good if you are an ugly bastard!
bigger head, add more water and don't leave home until it grows to cover it up!!

was it inspired by hannibal lector?

lol
mattban   08.07.09
'couture' just like 'art' are 2 words increasingly misused to ban the good old no applause for shit rule.
i don't see why the theatre should be the only place left in culture where you are allowed to boo out peolpe when you believe their work is plain shit.
thank you to designboom for providing the cannonfodder
Faskingwhy   08.07.09
clever social satire lost on humorless people
Euel Gibbons   08.07.09
horror!
lavender   08.07.09
deserves merit for thinking out of the box a start in a new direction

"in an attempt to bring some of the natural world back into civil living...."

Plant a tree ya idiot
Gary   08.08.09
I believe the concept is important, stale and constantly over-used, but important. The lack of attention paid to the construction and motion of the accessories is an amateur mistake and can easily be avoided. They see arbitrary in their execution - perhaps if more elegant forms were chosen to accentuate the living organisms they could appeal to both the linear and abstract thinkers who share the same view on this whole "green" frenzy.

There is a way to have great impact and polished, tasteful design.
mmanos   08.08.09
could we re-open the mental hospitals Jeff Kennett closed down, put ben landau in there a give him a box of crayons and toilet paper?
lemon   08.08.09
Wow Lemon, harsh!!

I find the comments on here even more amusing than the project. My favorite is: "what an unspectacular waste of materials"

Keep the snarky crit coming ;)
julie   08.09.09
this could be a really good begin of a new perspective for taking care of our enviroment. wearing "salvation"
Aldo gnz   08.10.09

You know, I've often wondered "When, oh when, will some artist design a garden fence you can wear on your face?"
mojo   08.12.09
Howz about a bucket of sand to stick their heads in?
logdogsmith   08.13.09
omfg come on now people would u really wear this
2cute4u   08.13.09
seriously makes you question the direction craft victoria is going... the exhibition had so much promise, and yet has clearly fallen flat on its face. so boring!!
gerti   08.14.09
Euel Gibbons [several comments above] put it nicely.

Perhaps better to consider the subjective nature of art before doltishly bashing interesting creations.

True enough I wouldn't wear shrubbery on my face - but I hardly think that's the point.
Benjamin   08.18.09
This message is to me the person with the ugly bastard comment....I saw it and busted a gut. I even snorted. Thanks :)
