bio-accessories by ben landau and brittany veitch

bio-accessories by australian designers ben landau and brittany veitch are a series
of wearable couture pieces which mask the unpleasant sights, sounds and scents of
a city in an attempt to bring some of the natural world back into civil living.

each piece of bio-accessories incorporates a living organism to accompany the wearer
throughout their day, creating a symbiotic relationship. the human tends to the animal
or plant, which reciprocates by bringing fresh air, light, greenery, privacy or birdsong
to the wearer. the pieces are representative of mobile natural environments, framed
within a fashionable alternative.









bio-accessories is an experimental speculation of responsive, functional, fashionable
and emotional craft within a city living context. it is currently on show as part of craft
victoria’s craft cubed exhibition at the city library for the month of august.

Not really a fan of the top two; they seem just plain ridiculous. But the bottom two are just fabulous. The last one seems ready to wear, plausible and beautiful. The second to last seems goofy and yet lovely (my favorite combination for accessories).

whether or not it is an artistic statement, a line of absolutely non-wearable accessories made out of tangible materials is just lame especially in the particular way they framed their presentation to the public. the worst part is that each of these are "one-offs." The logic behind them is purely aesthetic and looking at them is more like looking at studies of the real project. i'd like to see the third and fourth iterations of the exact same things, once they've actually spent the time to refine them. had they photographed them in a high-fashion editorial the response for these particular items may have been different and better received.

They've got the plants mouth cover for oxygen to breathe, and the bird in the ear to hear nature sounds, now they just need something in front of the eyes to see and something under the nose to smell, to complete the illusion.

I like the birdy-thing most but I would have placed the cone more at the level of the ear, now it looks like the stick is growing out of her ear.

I believe the concept is important, stale and constantly over-used, but important. The lack of attention paid to the construction and motion of the accessories is an amateur mistake and can easily be avoided. They see arbitrary in their execution - perhaps if more elegant forms were chosen to accentuate the living organisms they could appeal to both the linear and abstract thinkers who share the same view on this whole "green" frenzy.

There is a way to have great impact and polished, tasteful design.
