come up to my room: part 1 - the rooms

room installation by jeremy hatch presented by MADE
the come up to my room exhibit gives a talented crop of artists and designers a chance to showcase their
work through a series of unique installations inside toronto’s gladstone hotel. the installations are spread
throughout the hotel, including inside the rooms, the hallways and even some of the bathrooms. there
were 23 artists and designers included in this year’s show. this edition of come up to my room marks the
sixth anniversary of the show and the first for the curatorial team of katherine morley, caroline shaheed,
jeremy vandermeij and deborah wang.

room installation by jeremy hatch presented by MADE
jeremy hatch’s room installation features an elaborate multi-part ceramic landscape that appears to be
full-size wood scraps, rope and tools. the pristine white pieces are hung from the wall and ceiling,
giving the illusion that they are the real thing only white washed. the piece aims to freeze a moment
in time, preserving it by casting it in porcelain.

room installation by erin mccutcheon, einav nekori, annie tung and andree wejsmann
this collective room installation features a series of objects and installations which interpret the brothers
grimm story ‘the juniper tree’. this gothic story of jealousy, innocence and death is brought to life through
ceramic birds, three-dimensional books and fabric covered spoons.

room installation by bruno billio and matt nye
this conversation piece room aims to explore the personal and reformative relationship between
domesticity and technology. in the room, a projector displays a spinning wooden chair onto the
window’s curtains, while in the next room a small peep hole looks onto the same chair spinning
in reality.

‘in my heart’ by matt carr and joyce lo
‘in my heart’ explores the experiences people share in hotel rooms. on the wall, lighting spells out
‘can’t get enough’ as small monocles dangle from the ceiling. peering into the lenses blurs the lights
showing overlapping hearts instead.

room installation by liz wolfe and mauricio affonso
artist and photographer liz wolfe teamed up with industrial designer mauricio affonso to create this magical
installation that represents their shared sense of homour. for their room, the two devised a fantasy landscape
that features candy-coloured ice cream cones on top of lush fabrics as a hot air balloon sits on the floor next
to them.
