come up to my room: part 2 - more rooms

room installation by derrick hodgson

the come up to my room exhibit gives a talented crop of artists and designers a chance to showcase their
work through a series of unique installations inside toronto’s gladstone hotel. the installations are spread
throughout the hotel, including inside the rooms, the hallways and even some of the bathrooms. there
were 23 artists and designers included in this year’s show. this edition of come up to my room marks
the sixth anniversary of the show and the first for the curatorial team of katherine morley, caroline shaheed,
jeremy vandermeij and deborah wang.

room installation by derrick hodgson

toronto based illustrator and artist derrick hodgson described his room very simply ‘a box filled with mania…creatures, things and stuff’. while very broad this description definitely fits. the room features
small wooden characters climbing the walls and floors, flying around on a mechanical zipline and
painted onto the wall and mixed media artworks.

‘suspect: a masquerade of objects, materials and functions’ by david chang, andrea chin and amrita takhar

this group room installation features the work of three designers from the ontario college of art and design.
the central piece is an accordion like table which can expand in and out. hanging above is a collection of
ceramic lights cast in a variety of flashlight forms and below is a multi-textured carpet which look like a
hardwood floor. over on the wall, a series of racquets have been outfitted with two-way mirrors,
while a collection of ceramic animal parts serve as a strange array of hooks.

the most aromatic installation features a exploration of light and space bt his local architecture firm known
for their use of wood. the room was clad in recycled wood, which was formed into a bench that curved
into the ceiling. a drop ceiling hung on the other side with a channel running through it that featured
a moving light.

room installation by andrew macdonald

artist andrew macdonald created a collection of figurative and abstract sculptures for his room installation.
the works are all knitted textiles produced using a low-tech knitting machine. macdonald uses knitting in
his work because of its haptic qualities and the range of forms and colours it makes possible.

room installation by eric mathew and andrew ooi presents by MADE

these two designs have been collaborating for only a short while, creating designs using paper. their works
draws inspiration from japanese paper techniques, contrasting the public conception of paper as a disposable
resource. their latest work is a series of folded paper lamps, including rectangular table lamps and hanging
lamps which have complex geometric forms.
