the "equal" is a font created by designer Isabel Lucena where all the characters occupy the same area per square meter. The area of each letter was calculated by developing a program that counted the amount of pixels each character takes in the screen, having this information the thickness of each letter was adjusted until they all used the same amount of pixels. This font was originally created for a symposium about "equality" in the cultural center "de balie", in Amsterdam, where conferences about many aspects of the subject were taking place over a weekend. The typography pretends to express that equality does not mean harmony nor balance, especially when it is enforced blindly in a mixed society and it overlooks peoples different needs and expectations. The specimen was originally presented in a series of 50 silkscreened posters with quotes from the "animal farm" book.
