‘hand made for mass-production’, a stool by new zealand designer anthony robertson reflects two contrasting ends of the design spectrum, contemporary and traditional. its overall form speaks a contemporary language fluent in todays modern commercial furniture market place. the aesthetic detailing, as well its construction speaks of traditional woodworking techniques. cold construction dowelling pins are reminiscent of pre-industrial materials where the notion of self assembly enhances the overall idea of the handmade, when the user finds themselves constructing the final product. the irregular angles and stool stands act as a point of difference to existing stools creating simple relationship between minimal materials. the exposed construction speaks a traditional hand craft language and bring through elements and perceptions of human involvement where each connection offers a compelling counterpoint to existing generic mass produced artifacts.
