‘autora -olgoi kholkhoi’ by shinsuke yamaji

osaka-based designer shinsuke yamaji has created an innovative packaging material for the alternative electronic band autora and their new album olgoi kholkhoi. a stone like coffin has been created using a mixture of newspaper and plaster, solidified using a pressing system to achieve higher durability and quality of the everyday plastic CD case. as digital audio data becomes ubiquitous, the attractive and innovative packaging of the old-fashioned CD will become increasingly important for consumers when choosing their musical format.

once the newspaper and plaster is mixed together, it is filtered with a hand cloth, pressed using a metallic mould, and finally naturally sun-dried. the process reflects on a group of villagers intricately creating hand-crafted works in the depths of the mountains. with this method, autora’s musical concept of abstract exoticism ‘nowhere exoticism’ has been represented not only in its music but with its packaging design too, further enhancing the individualism that the music portrays.
