a stone a mountain

chinese designer jingfeng fang created an emotionally evocative experience as his master’s thesis project. mirroring the simple, casual, poetic and tranquil life of the mountain village of southeast china, ‘a stone a mountain’ goes beyond a physical product and provides a memory object deeply engrained in the culture’s history and nature. a contemporary timber container works in conjunction with an aged lid, filled with rice, a stone, experience and peace. the knob is longer in order to create a symbolic form to provide people with an unfamiliar feeling, as well as the ability to open the box without a thought. the memory box is a haptic journey of the senses; it is not simply an ‘object,’ but a memorable journey.

the use of rice as a method of storage is deeply rooted in traditional culture, thought to be the safest place to keep an object. its unique characteristics allow the user to experiment with the relationship between the item and the grains, placing them on the surface or burying them deep to be hidden at the bottom. the stone, locally referred to as ‘spirit stones,’ represent the mountain, a piece of tranquility in nature brought to your heart and home for meditation and contemplation. cast out of liquid porcelain, each unique stone’s dramatic form and wondrous colors evoke sensitive emotions while maintaining a hard facade with fragile qualities.
