belgian architecten demeestere+garmyn and partners have designed a residential block for patrimundo in ronse, belgium. the project is located on a church square within the 19th century core, between the station quarter and the actual city centre, adjacent to a dominant neo-gothic church. the former structures on the site consisted of fragmented facades. the underlying construction, however, does not fully reflect the luxurious and rich expression of the elevation, making this district an ideal example of the era’s typical architecture. adjoined to a city park, the apartment building is conceived to integrate into an existing urban context, combining contemporary elements within a similar scale to respect the history.

not protected as local heritage, the facades have been voluntarily kept and integrated in the new concept. mixed and matched elevations are typical of the encompassing fabric, the antithesis of homogeneous in terms of architectural expression, ensuring the small scale of the site. this creates a scale of man with multiple elements. the side which overlooks the church plaza is patchworked and the vertical window openings are in equilibrium with the neogothic church. the other side of the building is quite the opposite, with a curved new facade to border the city park. the arched edge saved a beautiful old red beech, which confronts the building.
