mike thompson: latro algae lamp

image: susana camara leret

the latro lamp by eindhoven-based designer mike thompson utilizes living algae as its power source.
the lamp design was inspired by a scientific breakthrough made earlier this year by scientists from
yansei and stanford university that allows a small electrical current to be drawn from algae during
photosynthesis. latro is hanging lamp that makes us of this discovering, drawing its energy from
a glass chamber of algae. the alga only needs sunlight, carbon dioxide (co2) and water to survive,
so placing the lamp outside and breathing into the lamp begins the energy production process.
the energy produced is subsequently stored in a battery ready to be called upon at night.

A sustainable way to light our future, hope your vision will be in everyone's eyes.

Really nifty! Just wonderin' how much breathing one has to perform on a daily basis? From lights to transport d;-)

Makes no sense to me to bring a lamp outside during the day, when I may have to use it. So when it rains, I'll have no lights for the night? Or i suppose this is another vanity project?

All in all, its a good idea.. but how is it practical?

it would be possible to tie bioluminesense genes into the photosynthesis system so that the beautiful glass "lamp" would actually glow once the sun set. Someone will scream GMO, but there you are

is certainly prettier than solar panels!

This is awesome... when can we buy it?
John Carman   06.10.10
very exciting indeed
Tessa Ross-Phelan   06.11.10
Too bad it produces light only during daytime
Alex   06.12.10
Alex, you misread... it produces light at night, if you 'charge' it during the day.

I'd be interested to hear how many hours of light is produced at night from a day of sunshine?
guillermo   06.14.10
when and where can we buy this?!
