‘split chair’

‘split chair’ by berlin graphic and furniture designer daniel lorch came out of his study of steel tube furniture from the period between 1920 to 1940. his intention was to extend the classic tube bending construction on the basis of today’s 3d laser technology. through the bridging of these contrasting production processes, a new methodology was made feasible.

french metal worker and designer jean prouvé never disguised the production process of his furniture. he worked with weld that was not smoothed off and with constructions that mainly responded to static considerations. drawing from this approach, lorch’s wall lamps from his ‘X,Y and Z’ light series seeks to give an account of the production process through the design rather than obscuring it as it is common in industrial manufacturing.
