stefan sagmeister: darwin chair

'darwin chair'
all images by johannes van assem
new york-based designer stefan sagmeister's 'darwin chair' for dutch design company droog
is constructed from a free swinging structure
that is comprised of more than 200 sheets
of attached prints. like a pad of paper, the chair offers its audience opportunities to consider
its functionality as a presentational object. as the top sheet gets dirty or tired, the user can simply
rip it off, revealing the layer below, and quickly transforming the appearance of the chair
(with the remaining perforation eventually forming a comfortable head rest). the chair persistently
evolves the visual identity of the pieces within the space it occupies. each of the sheets of TyvekŪ
are printed with intricate patterns abstracting the creation of the universe, making their way through
the creation of the world, from the beginning of plant, animal and human life, all the way to the
digital revolution.
the 'darwin chair' is being shown as part of droog's presentation at design miami / basel 2010
from june 15th - 19th, located at booth G28, hall 5, messe basel, messeplatz.

demonstration of the sheets being pulled back to reveal new layers

the chair resembles that of a large 'note pad' with perforations which make it easy to rip of each sheet
and, how fantastic that you can change the thematic scheme of your chair!
Awesomely done.
This is amazing and impressive to see Droog fostering collaborations between designers.
