dsquared2 skeletal stilettos

image: tommy ton
perhaps stealing a page from the hoof shoe craze, dsquared designed this series of skeletal stilettos for
their fall/winter 2010 collection. the series features a variety of high heeled boots and shoes that feature
heels that look like they are made from spinal columns. the shoes are mostly plain with lace-up side
details on some, straps and simple leather patterns on others. these simple details are contrasted by the
organic formed spines on the heels. the shoes will go on sale this august online through select retailers.

Now I see someone has taken re-bar and curved an end and made a series of coat hangers- for 5 years now, my neighbour has his house numbers welded in re-bar and stuck to huge boulder (did it himself): we have all been using re-bar for ages- it's cheap, strong, interesting to look at. I saw a hair dresser on TV saying he "wrapped her hair in a new plastic textile and tied it off" to create her hair do- sort of like my granny putting rags in her hair?....
and when I see a screen made of 'tulip tree veneer' , painted black and white and glossed, I think.."Did it absolutely have to made out of tulip tree?" who can tell? And then of course, surprise! dragonflies, paperclips, skulls, gears...steampunk, anyone? In fact, steampunk is one of the brightest and most interesting movements going, fusing crafstmanship, sharing of ideas, industrial revolution, art, and technology. Wake up, whoever is paying through the nose for someone else to do what you can think up in half a day if you just look around and think fearlessly.
And kudos to the real designers, who come up with concepts that blow me out of the water, and in turn inspire all of us.
