adrian lippmann: fold flat shelter

'fold flat shelter'

'fold flat shelter' was created by german designer adrian lippmann, founder interior design
firm form-al. these tent like structures are unsupported mini-houses made of light composite
panels to be used as disaster relief shelters. developed with only a few elements, each panel
comes in relatively small dimensions resulting in a compact building design.

basic-module requires 8 sq.m of floorspace and can be expanded to 13-18 sq. m

the shelters are shipped flat and are assembled manually by first folding the walls and
roof to attain the basic shape. adjustable substructures are then mounted and placed on
top of this primary construction to finalize the building.

'fold flat shelter' was presented at the DMY international design festival berlin 2010.

Excellent! Have always thought that something like this in international container size would be most useful in disaster situations. Would be interesting to see what it looks like in its folded form d;-)

I would like to see it being folded or unfolded. It is not clear how it works, and how many people it takes to assemble.

The use of space seems very inefficient.

Folded the shelter is a package by 3 x 1.5 x 0.3 m, so a piece will fit on a van roof for example, lots on a truck. The inner size of the basic unit (as shown) has 8 s.qm. So there will be space for 3-4 people sleeping… and 15 standing. The wide corners allow storage space for triangular shelfs a.s.o. using space is not a matter of verticals or horizontals i think.
