olli erkkila: forkless bicycle

olli erkkila: forkless bicycle

image: olli erkkila

norweigan bicycle designer olli erkkila likes to push the limits of bike design, as proven by this design
that has no front fork. the all white forkless bike is erkkila’s second forkless design and one of his many
odd creations. the design uses a modified frame that is steered using handlebars connected to a steering
rod that turns the front wheel. the frame is modified to support the rider in the absence of the front fork,
with added tubing below the seat. with this design and erkkila’s others bikes in mind, we cant wait to see
what he does next.

seoul cycle design competition 2010

currently, seoul design foundation together with designboom are hosting
seoul cycle design competition 2010. once considered a 'hard' city, seoul is making
strides toward becoming a 'soft' city by embracing design concepts that will redefine
its urban environment with an emphasis on themes centering on green, blue, history
and human. the seoul cycle design competition will be held under the theme,
'cycling with design: seoul style,' and is part of seoul’s city-wide effort at improving
its design brand and image. the primary goal of the competition is to help build a design
oriented city that focuses on its people. the competition is divided into three categories:
cycle design, cycle fashion & accessories design, and cycling infrastructure.
all three categories emphasize environment-friendly ideas, with the hope that the contest
will contribute to establishing a healthier cycling culture.

registration is currently open. to learn more about the competition and to enroll, see here.

but why??
rok   06.28.10
i say why not?
at least this bike has a hub and spokes... and he's proven that it rides, that's a rarity for the bike "designs" on this site..
mind you, there is something unicylish about it that bugs me a tad.. but whatevs.. nice work dude!
rnrjc   06.28.10
HAH! Pretty cool - I'd ride it. It would be neat to see an under-seat steering version. The design also looks like it would translate to a more recumbent riding position, well.

I believe Olli Erkkilä is from Finland, not from Norway, although he's wearing shirt that refers to Sweden. At least he has a Finnish name and a Finnish mobile number.

Its odd and weird but im all for it--and it works too which is more than i can say for most of the dreaming out there. I hope it leads to a practical, desirable product and a market. Yes why, but also yes why not?
charles   06.29.10
INCREIBLE!
carmen   06.29.10
I want one. FYI, that video is from 2008.
James   06.29.10
but it wouldn't fit in bike racks with the width of that steering mechanism
i should be painting   06.29.10
it is super cool and pimped out. No haters

Absolutely awesome. Apparent the structure and seating would classify this bike as a cruiser and I can definitely see myself riding that down the coast attracting attention and awe. I applaud you olli erkkila for attempting a bike design apart from the conventional fork and triangle system. However the rear portion can be design to flow better with the front and the turning radius can be a tad sharper. Otherwise great job.
