greg saul: sketch chair
greg saul: sketch chair

new zealand designer greg saul is working on software that easily allows users to design and build their
own products using rapid manufacturing. sketch chair is the first iteration of this project. the software is
based on processing and enables users to design objects using 2-D sketching techniques. the software
translates the 2-D drawings into a 3-D form which can be printed out or laser cut. the user then simply
punches out the pieces and assembles their designs. the project is a collaboration with jst erato design
ui project in tokyo.

Your concept is awesome.
But, I got some ideas. If your software can be google sketchup's plugin, it can be better, because sketchup modeling is easy and powerful.^^

nice idea, but sketchup is 3d, sketch-chair only 2d. so the "construction-engine" would be much more complicated. dwg import would be ok, too. polygons,... could be drawn much more precise, that way.

haha! .dwg import is a nice idea too, but my meaning is modify the chair in a 3d way, also can print out a paper structure, because chair is a 3d not just use the 2d to extrude. "just my comment"^^

...FABULOUS !!.....excellent control over ergonomic function; more-than-acceptable form; a percentage of 'green quotient'; and the really exciting added value of customisable 'tuning'. Thirty years ago, we used to dream of such versatility..!!! Congratulations to you and your team on every count.
Now: commerciality.....
Also: tweak the program slightly, adding the capacity to produce full-size in corrugated cardbord (waste products)....the basics are there, one needs to derive 'bridging' between elements to combine ridgidity AND seating surfaces. (see Papanek: 'Design For The Real World')
