the water hyacinth is the world's worst water weed, according to pinpach piyatiratitivorakul.
it chokes lakes, dams and irrigation channels. it increases water loss by evaporation,
degrades water quality and obstructs water transport, providing sheltered breeding sites for
disease vectors such as mosquitoes.

throughout many of thailand's rivers, the water hyacinth has been wreaking havoc on local
water transportation and the natural flora and fauna of the country. responding to this problem,
thai designer pinpach piyatiratitivorakul has created the 'avo' fruit holder which is constructed
from the invasive plant. pinpach has employed local thai craftsman for production of the basket
whose form draws on the oval shape of the luscious avocado fruit and its gradation of color.
the 'avo' fruit holder was shortlisted in the recent designboom / MACEF competition
'the intelligent hand'.
