sebastian errazuriz: we are fucking angry

nozzle detail of 'we are fucking angry'
chilean-born new york-based artist sebastian errazuriz seeks to create works which
provoke people to think about their lives and question their daily routines. he is obsessed
with the dichotomies of life and death, which is evident through his sculpture, public art work,
consumer objects, furniture and fashion design.

'we are fucking angry'
errazuriz's recent project 'we are fucking angry' is a response to the recent BP oil spill
that was a result of the deepwater horizon drilling rig explosion which occurred
april 20, 2010 in the gulf of mexico. his own studio floor is covered in oil which was
caused by minor spill accidents while trying to fabricate the piece that consists of an
improvised black oil filled spray can grenade which has been painted gold. his studio spent
an entire day testing different oil cans, industrial rubber bands and safety pins to construct it.

the BP oil spill is the USA's greatest environmental disaster. the endangered species coalition
estimates that more than 40 endangered species could suffer including brown pelicans, sea turtles,
least tern etc. 'we are fucking angry' was presented at an art screening organized by artist tom sachs,
in which numerous art pieces responding to the disaster, were exhibited and auctioned at the
wooly in new york, with all funds going towards helping the endangered species coalition.

'it would be great if people at home could replicate the design and make their own
improvised oil grenades to express their anger at BP. it would be the 2010 street art
equivalent to the PETA manifestations of the 90s where they would throw glasses of
black oil over haute couture fur coats in socialite events.'- sebastian errazuriz
Art really is pointless.
Since WWII, it's been art because someone says it is. Which makes me question, Is it not art because I say it isn't?
The device was built to capture people's imagination empowering them to demand a solution. By menacing BP executives with homemade oil grenades targeted at their suits cars and offices the piece is ironically illustrating the fantasy of a revenge: "An eye for an eye".
MIL:
The Duck lamp was fabricated with a real taxidermy goose which had been thrown to a garbage dump by a museum. The goose had its neck broken, thus the idea to recycle it and give it new life.
SWH:
I think you have a good point. An artist should be entitled to negate the artistic quality of an object with the same principles he or she can use to designate something as art.
"An eye for and eye" makes the assumption that the original act was intentional - which could not be further from the truth!
why donīt you recycle just objetcs is a fact that dead animal no need help to be recycled. made lamps with dead animal is just a bizarre bussines.
...but please understand; you have my empathy, and admiration for carrying the strength of your convictions into the studio and realising a piece. Perhaps with a little more thought (and less angst) one could have come upon a symbology which spoke as strongly, but with less enviromental impact. Am hoping that you keep on with your art......and, by the way, love your fabrication; skill is apparent.
To assume is to make an ass out of u & me ;)
The intention is not to spill more oil but to galvanize people into action. It is a functional conceptual art piece.
Datp:
Thank you for bringing to my attention the tragedy of Bhopal. I will think about it. There are many talented artists in India who can best speak about this disaster.
James:
I wish you all the best.
Is not that the point of art? you do your piece, we observe it and comment it, NO need of the reply of the artist, your work should talk by itself.
PS. Totally agree with Camila, if the supposed artist is indeed defending himself, he should put that energy into his next project instead.
PPS. I must acknowledge that the artist has sparked a discussion with this piece, but in my opinion: not the right one.
Art is in the eye . . . . . . As for me, all I see is a no-talent, pompous wannabe, probably living off the government teat, and taking pot-shots at those who actually work for a living and make the economy/world function.
Try directing your efforts in support of those who protect you and actually run the companies (small and large) who tirelessly keep the economy chugging along so you can even exist.
BP is irresponsible, let's make no quarms about that. They should be given the choice of being sent to the wall via a class action and federal fines, or made to implement renewable alternatives across their whole business model.
A few points on the bloggers:
Camila + MWP: This is a weblog, everybody has the right to reply, whether they are the artist or not.
Wayne: Your patriotism is obvious, sadly your understanding of how the world/economy functions and how humans exist is poorly informed.
Sebastian: Interesting bit of work, nevermind the critics!
sebastian errazuriz: personal registration of
removing the hour and minute hands from a series of vintage watches has resulted in the first timepieces that don't actually tell time, but which allow you to just watch that it is passing.

sebastian errazuriz: duck fan
'the duck's continuous silent resistance steals a smile and reminds the viewer that ducks fly against the wind every day.' -sebastian errazuriz
