michael young: DuPont™ Corian® Design Studio, shanghai

'dupont™corian® design studio'
a fluid solid structure made using 3D CNC technology
located in shanghai, china, the first Dupont™Corian® Design Studio in asia has been
designed by UK designer michael young. the project concept is to bring eastern
and western cultures together, drawing from the rich history of chinese art and building
techniques, combined with modern technology. the pieces designed in the studio express
the many possibilities that Dupont™ Corian® has in several areas of the surface market.

'it was ironic that the Corian® sample logo is a hexagon, our research into ancient building
and construction lead us to similar mathematical constructions, combine this with our
modern studio techniques and the machines developed especially for the project and we
have a state of the art project. my brief was to create objects that demonstrate the
different applications of the material so I set the space up more as a gallery to give each
object its own importance. fortunately, my design office in hong kong is experienced in
contemporary asian culture and adept with building computer programs to create the
complex structures we designed.' - michael young

detail
an important feature of the project is the curved wall that uses the latest 3D CNC technology
with thousands of bricks assembling to make a fluid solid structure. the element is extended
to some wall circles that explore the processes vertically out of solid piece and 3D
translucent walls.

the gallery is intended as a walk through experience of discovery. the space, which is
currently set up with designs of high speed train interiors and contemporary bathrooms
and kitchens, will grow over the next 6 months with the introductions of several elements
that will constantly change the experience of visitors.

the Dupont™ Corian® Design Studio shanghai serves as the premier platform to demonstrate
how Dupont™ Corian® solid surfaces can be used as versatile design materials customized
for commercial and residential applications. strolling along the showroom, visitors will be
exposed to the versatility and wide range of applications of the material from furniture; art pieces;
wall decoration to daily houseware.
