hila shilon: beyond function
hila shilon: beyond function

'beyond function'
first stage
'beyond function' by israeli product designer hila shilon are a series of chair designs
that aim to put focus on the normally unnoticed parts of everyday objects. using
a screw thread as her main design instrument, the project consists of three chairs, each
in a different stage. it's purpose was to test the boundaries between order and chaos,
function and aesthetics, the predicted and the strange. in the third stage, the screw
thread becomes the chair and the wood is the one that connects them all together.

'I used the reinforcement and securing instruments as a metaphor of the working class
outskirts of society, those who do all the hard labor. I imagine them breaking out in a rage
of violence, demanding what they deserve. in accordance, the screw thread grows and takes
over the chair. the screw's shape is formed through its rebellion and its powerful demand
for existence and recognition in the world. as an act of outburst and rage it violently
overcomes the designed object. in its fight, the screw thread gets a life of its own.'- HS

aaaah, the 'screws and attachments for the working class' metaphor is bullshit, but the objects, and the progression of the system are great. No need to load it up with some tired rhetorical claptrap.

What a great expression of a metaphor! I like the process, the roughness, and the delicate details you can see in a "mass production" object
Beautiful 08.18.10
the more i look and think about this original project i can't help but admire the thought that was put into it, the long process and led to this fascinating work of art.
absolute coolness 08.18.10
intelligent and extremely pretty

We need to show respect for labour and nature!

If she is concerned with the working classes she should invest her time in creating high quality products that are easy and cheap to reproduce and which will provide work for said people. She should not be making overly conceptual, almost useless gimicks that nobody would want to use let alone take time out to "understand".
Bored of "art" 08.19.10
not to throw a damper on this deep metaphor, but its not reinforcement its threaded rod which is exspensive and stainless. Reinforcement is not threaded and not stainless. Threaded bar does not make a good allusion to the working class as it is exspensive, little used and highly specified ie size, shape, thread, strength and coating. Poor effort and it looks very uncomfortable, good design should aid use not hinder it.
poor all round.
poor all round.

It's funny to criticize the functionality of these chairs when the title is "beyond functionality".
