'garden tools' by itay laniado - 'design for all' competition shortlisted revealed

machete
'garden tools - form / function research' by itay laniado from israel is one of the 240 shortlisted entries from more than
5100 participants in our recent designboom competition 'design for all' in collaboration with seoul design fair 2010.
designer's own words:
'the project approaches garden tools from a material, aesthetic, and functional investigative perspective.
the bulk of my research focused on the development of a technique of bending and stretching wood into
functional forms while maintaining the simplicity, both of the production process and of the working approach
of the tools. in addition, I conducted a formal investigation into developing the shape of the blades –
both in the design and in the bending process. the project includes six final objects: sickle, axe/machete, spade,
shovel, scythe and bow saw. each piece is created from wood (oak) and stainlesss-steel blades.'
stay tuned. the entire list of shortlisted entries from the 'design for all' competition will be revealed shortly.

its beautiful!
my favorit project from the exhibition!!
but why use oak (very rigid) and not ash
and why stainless steel which, although it's shiny (what designers like) , is not as strong as other kinds of alloys
However : I have a few issues with the materials.
- Humidity (wet soil, watering, etc...) : can the wood keep from naturally bending as it is often enclined to do ?
- Tension ( from lifting soil with the spade ) : while admirable in compression, wood fibers tend to rupture under tension. Is continued use a problem?
I'd have kept the shape of the shaft but turned it 90 degrees to better accomodate the motion of digging. (this is minor as most people tend to care for their tools ).
- Elasticity : wouldn't moving the bow saw to and fro play on the bow's flexibility ? I'd be afraid to unhook the blade. Or just breaking it when tension is insufficient.
- Dirt : While incredibly beautiful, is rope the best solution for the grips ? what treatment do you suggest to keep them from getting spoiled under outdoor use ?
Eye-catching project nonetheless.
its a good?
I can not find concept,
DIY not equal ECO.
