volker haug: new lighting

rudolf pendant

volker haug is a designer based in melbourne, australia who specializes in creating unique lighting fixtures.
haug explains on his site that he designed his first lamp series when he was only 10 years old. since then he
has been busy crafting lamps which are both raw and polished, incorporating industrial elements to create slick
designs. his collection of designs includes names like antlers, daisies, lucky and jewelry; each created with
uncommon materials and processes. initially inspired by electric double adapters, the antler series is now made
of hand cast porcelain, bringing the design to a more polished level. the jewelry series is a collection of simply
lightbulbs on cords that get their structure through a metal tube that is bent into a convoluted shape.

On the andler pendant.
It might be new for Haug, but it's not new at all.

The rest is interesting. But why do people take old or cheap or scrap material to make things. Think new and explore new material. New paradigm!!??

To Poetti,
Creating things with cheaper materials is a good way for a designer to explore ideas and develop. Haug is from Melbourne where there is not a host of manufacturers lining up to give young designers a go, as manufacturing is not a boom in Australia. I reckon good on him for creating some interesting pieces.

the antler lights are amazing. i've been to his studio in melbourne at the abbotsford convent and seen him at the early stages of the prototype and it is great to see the final outcome. well done.

more than eight years ago. friends offered me this item as a smart objet bizarre from Prague - another socialist vintage, to become a fake treasure in the vanity fair of western design

The antlers are actually ceramic, custom made by Volker to look like electrical fittings

Thank you Dave for the precision, now I have an other light on this project.

Karl, we have the same problem here in Canada. But I think it's important to develop and invest in material that seems expensive. Even for a designer with not so much ressources. You start with small object. On the long run, i believe that the ROI will be better, for money, and from the media exposure.
