'sunn beam' by garret belmont from the usa is one of the shortlisted design entries
from more than 3000 participants in our recent designboom competition
'seoul cycle design competition 2010' in collaboration with seoul design foundation.
designer's own words:
'the sunn beam bicycle is for the serious beach bum. the key to the design is the hollow
beam frame capable of carrying a beach umbrella and folding beach chair.
a removable cargo rack allows for additional luggage for essential sunbathing
and picnicking supplies.'
all the winning entries and some of the shortlisted designs will be exhibited at the seoul design fair 2010
from september 17th to october 7th.

I don't understand how you are supposed to steer with this bike... if the beam is hollow, there's no transmission between the handlebar and the front wheel, and if there actually is a connection, that means the beam isnt hollow, making the whole concept completely useless for umbrella and beach chair transportation

has it actually been made some kind of test? I don't belive you can really ride on thick sand just increasing a bit the width of your tyres

Has anyone tried riding a bike on sand? i doubt the balloon tyres combined with the extra weight will make it an easier way of of carrying beach stuff...As the tyres seem to have no grip im assuming the designer has decided it isn't to go on roads, but this doesn't explain the lack of gears, beaches slope and when full the bike will weigh more and be more difficult to manoeuvre.... also how does the stuff not just fall out the back??

So much negativity...The front stem obviously carries through the beam and you still have 90% of it's length available for storage. You don't have to ride it on soft sand, you ride it to the beach from your apartment then get off and push if needs be - it still carries all your stuff (which doesn't fall out because you put a catch on the rear-light 'door'). Tyres don't show treads presumably because they were too difficult to model or it wasn't really necessary. C'mon, it's a concept folks!!!

Even though it is a concept it is still aesthetically painful. There is no regard of integration of idea and form. It looks like an existing bike frame with a rectangle slapped in the center. Particularly painful is how the seat stays tack on the side of this storage rectangle with no clean termination or integration.

It would be great to rent one of these on holiday somewhere hot... like the caribbean or thailand... but I'm pretty sure there aren't any beaches in Seoul. It would work for construction workers carrying spirit-levels or pipework, and you could also fit a nice big battery in there for an electric bike.

Treads are only for wicking away water when a tire rolls on a wet, hard pavement. There is actually better grip and friction with a treadless tire, especially on sand or grass.

Cool idea. I'm sure its still plenty of room for the umbrella even if you cant use the few inches in the front. Its also no problem riding a bike on beach if you ride close to the water, you can even do it with normal bikes. Love the idea about renting it as a kit at hotels, riding it down to the beach and maybe ride along the water looking for a good spot.
