naoto fukasawa: 'siwa' paper hat collection

designer naoto fukasawa has created a series of hats that are made entirely out of traditional
japanese washi-paper. the three pieces entitled 'ivy cap', 'hat', and 'tyrolean hat', are constructed
from a new type of paper called 'naoron' developed by washi-paper manufacturer onao which
withstands both moisture and weight, resulting in a lightweight material that does not tear easily.

resembling weathered leather in its crumpled texture, the colour and aesthetic treatment of the hats
do not lend themselves out to being made solely out of paper. though the material is soft and flexible,
they are entirely durable and highly water-proof.

Really nice hats, but not a new idea. People have been using a similar concept in durable paper-like material, called Tyvek, for awhile. Hussein Chalayan printed on and made complete outfits for women from the material. I sewed his samples in the stuff. Not an easy job! One difference might be that Tyvek seems to come in just white. Also wondering how these are placed in eco terms. Are they biodegradable?

The novelty is not washi-paper in general -- it's been used for various clothing items for some time -- but the use of this type it the appearance, which looks a bit like oil cloth. Washi is made from bark or grass, so it's biodegradable and surely recyclable. the production process consumes lye and bleach, both of which are harsh pollutants unless disposed of properly.

Love it, no matter these can be placed in eco terms or not !!

A quick investigation of the paper-like material reveals that it also has PET in it which is not paper. It still looks nice though and must have a lovely tactile quality to it as well.
