'lock light' by boyeon oh + geunhyuk yoo + seokho hwang

'lock light' by boyeon oh, geunhyuk yoo and seokho hwang from korea is one of the shortlisted design entries
from more than 3000 participants in our recent designboom competition, 'seoul cycle design competition 2010',
organized in collaboration with seoul design foundation.

designers' own words:
'most people consider bicycle locks to be troublesome. so many designers try to hide it when they design bicycles.
however, we felt different about the bicycle lock. by showing it, it can keep riders in safety.'

this is brilliant. it might be a bit thick, if you guarantee a strong chain - but nevertheless nice idea!

"so many designers try to hide it"... and you should try to hide your one too (it is sound rude but it is not).

A light emitter is surely something usefull but a red emitter chain (batteries + lock + chain + what kind of light source are you going to use though?) do not seems to me "working", neither "fashion" (euro taste at least), neither green / eco designed. Good night and good luck.

Not so bad, jedai bicycle lock.

Red or rear lights should not be seen from the front (road regulation), this seems to shines all over.
Why not take up the challenge to provide both front and rear lighting and solve the chain storage problem. I often find that my chain is rubbing the paint, interfering with the break / gear cables or I'm hitting it with my heel, or knee if hanging from the handlebar.

This idea is a nice start, now take it to the next level.

haha. jedai lock! brilliant lock!

great idea...but I'm afraid I have to agree with Gerard, it is completely against most of road regulations (I don't know about Seoul though), where the back light must be red and the front one either white or yellow.
Regarding Brera's concern of not being "fashion": I think it is about time to quit doing "fashionable" stuff and could you please tell us what the euro taste is?

Misunderstanding. I said what you and Gerard wrote here too ("hide your spreading red light") probably in a bad cognitive way (short sarcastic one and - my bad - did not suggest anything else). Regarding to "neither fashion", please read the entire sentence. I try to explain better: failing (maybe) in usability and sustainability, the concept "appeal" it's even weaker. Maybe somewhere else (macro area / cognitive ergonomics), a red lighting effect it's a design / marketing key goal, stronger than the rest. Maybe.

I hope we will have a chance to discuss more about perception / users experience / percentiles ("durchschnittswert", "perzentil") and share our opinions. Good night and good luck.
