madlab: bacterioptica

bacterioptica is a hanging chandelier made from fiber optics and petri dishes by the architecture firm madlab.
the design is intended to be adaptive in form and mechanics, consisting of over 15,000 feet of fibre optic
cable. the cables all emanate from a central point with various arms outstretched from the metal structure.
the individual light pods are sealed petri dishes that filter the light through bacteria literally growing inside.

Very very nice ! Although must be hell to clean ! ;-)

Very striking, and a lovely use of the fiber optics. However, I'm not not sure that the idea of filtering the light through bacteria really contributes anything, especially with so much else going on already. From what I can see, you wouldn't even know that the bacteria were there unless you were told. Do they change the colors of the light?
Taylor Haywood 09.21.10
it's pretty but I couldn't agree more with Taylor. What's the point/concept of the bacteria?
