'water displacement objects' by rochus jacob - iida awards 2010

'water displacement objects' by rochus jacob

'water displacement objects by rochus jacob from the usa is one of the shortlisted entries
from more than 4000 participants in the 'iida awards 2010' competition,
organized by designboom in collaboration with incheon metropolitan city.

to reduce unnecessary consumption of water, the stone-like volumes displace a portion
of the bath water without compromising the bath experience

rochus jacob was the grand prize winner of last year's iida awards with his design
of 'thermodynamic cooler' and 'murakami chair'.

designer's own words:
'many people stopped taking a bath in favor for a shower to save water. I always loved taking
a bath but felt guilty about the consumption. by adding volumes to your tub, the amount of water
used can be drastically reduced without radically changing behavior. 'water displacement objects'
enable people to take a full bath with 50% less water. it is a simply product made out of post
consumer water. I unconsciously collected stones at the beach that are just beautifully shaped
by nature. 3D scanning them allowed me to manifest their form in a prototype.'

You know, im really sick and tired of old ideas being touted as new--and then winning awards for them to boot! I was putting bricks and objects in tubs and toilets at least since 1970 and god knows it wasnt an original idea then either. My reply is BOOOO!
charles   10.08.10
how does this not compromise on the comfort of the bath...?
everlastingz   10.08.10
Bravo Charles, you were a pioneer! Apparently it was a good idea! You should have promoted your bricks back then...
Although I'm not sure whether they were that comfortable...
Laurent   10.08.10
let's also not forgot our friend Archimedes who first noted the concept of water displacement.
Dirk   10.08.10
charles, it did not win a prize, it is "only" shortlisted and the idea is not bad and still deserves attention.
well done!
kibi   10.08.10
Original and super nice!!!! :D
A   10.08.10
sure that it couldn't be dangerous in any way, i.e. letting the leg of a person going up??
bob   10.08.10
Giant tic tacs.
tic tac   10.08.10
im not so sure about the comfort neighter...
liinaliina   10.08.10
i like them, they're pretty, and i'm sure they're comfortable. they may even make good bath pillows.

besides, it's a DESIGN award not an INVENTION award. just because a chair was already invented doesn't mean one shouldn't try to make a new design for it. really.
jmt   10.08.10
bavo jmt...
i like your style!!!
it IS a design award, not invention
scrambledeggs   10.09.10
Displace the water with an extra body in the tub. It will be more fun than some rocks.
sw   10.09.10
beside comfy bath question those stones should be heavy as hell! hmm...and where to find a place for them, when they are not in use?
Kuroda   10.09.10
as above/// sold with a manual 1000 pound lifting crane
also what do you do when you have a shower in your bath, as most people do? clamber over giant slippery stones?
pedro   10.09.10
and water/other "precious resources" used in the manufacturing, packaging, shipping, etc etc etc. of these slick baubles. Enough with the eco-lipservice already, who can really feel so saintly for bathing with designer rocks, this is absurd.
Jane_Austerlitz   10.10.10
I don't think that the designer want to sell us HIS stones.
It is the concept that is most valid - you can use whatever object as "water displacement objects' to consume less water.
Some commentary got it right, use your fantasy Jane Austerlitz !
Henry   10.11.10
WHATTTTT??!!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Thatīs why I prefer not to enter this kind of competitions. The judges are 98% "artists" and 2% designers.
Big white stones.... When I take a bath, I want to relax...not to hurt my back.
God...where is the design in this world?
Mark   10.12.10
yes, this is a design award, but there's no project in this useless atavic thing! Design is another story...
Jack   10.12.10
The person who did this, won the last yearīs competition. Thatīs why he has been shortlisted. Obiously not for the "proyect".
Fernando Matzordo   10.13.10
geat idea...!!! and they look nice...!!! i like a lot...!!!!
