'solar beetle' by bora kim + kimhyelyn + park jong duck - iida awards 2010

'solar beetle' by bora kim, kimhyelyn, and park jong duck

'solar beetle' by bora kim, kimhyelyn, and park jong duck from korea is one of the shortlisted entries
from more than 4000 participants in the 'iida awards 2010' competition, organized by designboom
in collaboration with incheon metropolitan city.

featuring small solar panels on its surface, 'solar beetle' is a way for nature lovers to recharge
their electronic devices, such as mp3 players or camera batteries, while still on the go.

designers' own words:
'anyone who enjoys a challenge and adventure should try to hike at least once. in these days of
digital technological change, mobile, mp3 and other kinds of electronic equipment are indispensable
items for doing penniless journeys. bit it is impossible to use them for many hours and often there is
no place to recharge them. 'solar beetle' is a solution to the problem, utilizing natural techniques.'

is the beetle reference purely aesthetic? it limits the productive capability of the device. The whole top surface could be utilized for energy production.

Solar panel charger has been already out in the market for many years now. especially backpacks with solarpanel built into it I personally find much better solution than this charger. Rather than carrying additional item on your move, backpack can always be exposed to the sky when you wear or not wear them, while carrying many other objects within itself. I don't understand what is so special about this design in 2010.

This idea excites me to no end. Just cool to think we won't be limited by electrical outlets.

echo, thank you for making me feel that Iīm not alone. Thereīs nothign new on this proyect, except for the shape. Thatīs not design.

design is not a shape. Is more like a CONCEPT.
