this year, london / berlin art and design collective random international (stuart wood, flo ortkrass and hannes koch)
was acknowledged with the design miami / basel designer of the future award, being selected as one of four studios
shifting the boundaries of art, design and architecture.
carpenters workshop gallery presents a solo show, 'the behaviour of objects', showcasing random international's work
that challenges convention through their performative new media pieces. the trio shifts the role of the controller to that
of performer. their work plays with the viewer, moving from animate to inanimate, while employing elements of tension
and surprise. more than just signifiers of progress in digital technology, their work illuminates our perceptions and experiences
of light, our own behavioural responses and interactive spatial environments, fulfilling the basic human need for self expression.
on show are their three latest works: 'triptych', 'self-portrait' and 'swarm'.

'self-portrait' is the archetypal blank canvas. the installation engages you, the spectator, with a large-scale
ephemeral representation of yourself. all evidence of the encounter exists only in the moment of interaction
between the viewer and the work. gradually, moment and image fade away, never to be repeated. the piece
questions both the traditional concept and content of the portrait as a means of preserving memory through
image making. instead, 'self-portrait' becomes a self-reflexive experience that illuminates the poignancy
of the lost moment.

random international: fly at moscow biennial
inside a glass vitrine, an abstract representation of a fly is held captive, entrapped by eight cables and controlled by an autonomous algorithm which accurately simulates the observed behavior of real flies.
