'vanish' by chanmin jeong - iida awards 2010

'vanish' by chanmin jeong
'vanish' by chanmin jeong from korea is one of the shortlisted entries from more than
4000 participants in the 'iida awards 2010' competition, organized by designboom
in collaboration with incheon metropolitan city.
the series of posters alter the design of national flags to raise awareness about the detrimental
effects we as humans cause on the environment.
designer's own words:
'this is a public poster that simply expresses the environmental change each country
is going through using national flags with strong symbolism. each country is paying
a high price for environmental pollution. the period in which you could see a clear night
sky is gradually disappearing due to air pollution in china; several japanese cities are
being submerged in water from the rise of sea levels due to global warming; and the ice cap
of the alps, which is the symbol of switzerland, might melt away right before our eyes.
we are destroying the irreversible earth. it is regretful because it seems that we are living
without thinking about the future. the protection of the environment is now a must and
not an option.'

A widow in the last poster? A hyphen in place of em-dash? They teach us NOT to do that in typography 1!
p.s. good i love those typography puritans! they always make me laugh
in that case hire a proof reader or make posters in a native language. i just meant that with all the time and effort spent on designing and printing, its a 5 minute job to ask someone to take a look at the language!
