andrew beaumont: ceramic & wood

andrew beaumont is a british ceramic designer who recently graduated from the university of plymouth.
his work is of particular note for its combination of ceramic and wood.  beaumont explored this theme
in depth for his thesis projects which included a series of vases and speakers. the vase series features
ceramic vases in archetypal forms combined with bent wood which envelopes the vase with smooth
contours as if it were moulded around. the ceramic and wood speaker set is deigned to amplify the sound
from small ear bud headphones. the headphones attach to the speaker at the back and the sound is
reverberated through the ceramic bell, much like a gramophone.

no way he bent the wood like that, maybe carved it out, and this is a little bit overdoing, but nice shapes thoe

awesome ceramic, it too easy to underestimate this kind of quality.

Would be interesting to hear the sound from a ceramic cone. I thought that flexibility was required to generate the different sounds from a speaker and not sure how ceramic would work. Like the design features of the speakers d;-)

Andrew's beautiful collection of vessels and speakers was one of the most engaging collections of work that appeared at this year's New Designers show in London - its the leading UK showcase for design graduates. Great to see Andrew capturing such widespread attention.

The combination of the two materials works well. and they are beautiful forms. The speakers would get little amplification out of such short horns. I can’t see how this is not a bad rehash of the Phonophone by Tristan Zimmerman.

Well said JP, how dare these design undergraduates experiment with ceramic amplification!
