‘please do not let them stay in the paper-cutting!’ by chao yang from china is one of the shortlisted entries from more than 2000 participants in the ‘endangered species’ graphic design competition, organized by designboom in collaboration with tokyo designers week 2010.

by combining monochromatic graphics with colour photographs, the series of posters illustrates the steadily disappearing state of wild animals and ecological destruction.

designer’s own words: ‘wild animals are our friends. to protect them is to protect our kind. the three posters represent the sky, the earth, and the water by three representative animals. they are being hunted in different ways and slowly disappearing, after which only the graphic image can be seen. a number of our interests in enjoying certain delicacies, such as wearing fur, has let to the extinction of a large number of wild animals and ecological destruction. do we want to ‘harvest’ the animals? the main graphic of the posters is very two-dimensional, like a paper cut-out. it is intended to stimulate the protection of wild animals, so that we don’t have to see these animals just as paper cut-outs one day.’
