matthias pliessnig: amada bench

'amada'
all photos by gene young, smithsonian american art museum

the work of american designer matthias pliessnig straddles the concepts of craft, art and design.
his work is a synergy of time-honored techniques and modern digital aesthetic using skills as a
craftsman to bring his ideas to reality.

pliessnig recently completed 'amada', a design for a private client who wanted a large bench flowing
through his living space. the piece was designed to direct the sitter to face multiple directions.
the seating unit is made entirely of air-dried responsibly harvested white oak that has been steam bent
to create the curvaceous form of the bench.

gisela - hamburg   11.19.10
how could you produce it in an industrial way? cause if it is artigianal i think it is reaaalllyyyy expensive...
mike   11.19.10
BEAUTIFUL
Vuk   11.19.10
sexy as sculpture but not enough backing and judging from the photos, seat too deep to use the back for almost all of it

maurizio: and matthias pliessnig's bench is much more beautiful than frank gehri's in the lobby of the world building in aoyama tokyo, which happens to be next to the hotel i am staying at this week
frederic   11.19.10
beautiful object. looks like a boa moving through the jungle
apz   11.19.10
Gehry actually knocked-off Trubridge and Pliessnig. It really doesn't matter in the end, this speaks for itself.
Colgate3   11.19.10
Very good : i like it more than the work by Gehry
myface   11.19.10
good
ivan   11.19.10

'waive' by matthias pliessnig

design | 01.23.08

'waive' evokes a billowed grid of wood that has been depressed by the sitter. the piece is very lightweight and strong due to the compound curves.
