kaylene kau: prosthetic arm

kaylene kau: prosthetic arm

replacement limbs typically mimic the form of the human body, but this prosthetic arm by designer kaylene kau
takes a different approach. instead of modeling her arm design after a human arm, kau developed a single piece
prosthetic with a flexible tip. this arm is able to grip objects by wrapping itself around them. the design is meant
to compliment the user’s existing arm and not a full replacement for the missing arm. a motor inside the design
drives two cables that the wearer controls with switches on the upper portion.

this is excellent, just excellent.

I would be put under stress to have a tentacle instead of the arm
A & E   12.16.10
super amazing!

Hey, that's so sweet!

But take it further! Why not make it twise as long? A replacement limb is, of corse, kind of a set back, but give it some features that the original limb did not have. There are zillions of materials out there more effective than flesh and bones!

this looks like a tentakel in a horror movie. if i imagine to be disabled, i would be afraid to scare the people...
miriam   12.16.10
I'd be disgusted to see sth like this instead of an arm. Or on my relative, or friend...
darina   12.16.10
This is a fantastic piece of design. imaginative, fun, and well outside the box. Don't listen to the negative comments - I'd much rather see this, a device that challenges and in a way celebrates an amputation, than one of those foam/silicone fakeries that conceal and accentuate the "disability".

Our humanity is in our imagination, creativity, and ability to overcome, not merely in the shape of our bodies.
Scudwerth   12.17.10
this is completely fascinating. of course we're attached to the image of an arm but i think this piece is stunning because it is unusual and beautiful.
dhc   12.17.10
should be an additional arm not a replacement! it freaks me out! The proportion and smooth curvy design is beautiful. Looks like a MAC!
MARYAM   12.17.10
Will you be so happy to see it in real life when somebody approaches you, holds and shakes your hand with this tentacle? I don't know, I think you people gone crazy.
Iskender   12.19.10
THIS WILL BE AN AID TO HUMAN LIFE.GOD BLESS THE DESIGNER & HOPE TO HER WORKING ON SUCH PROJECTS USEFUL FOR NOT ONLY HUMAN BEING BUT ALSO OTHER LIVING BODIES.
DEEPAK SAWANT   12.19.10
There's one very basic function of a prosthetic arm - to let the disabled person live and look just like any other person. Nobody wants to look like an octopus hybrid...
Mrcn   12.19.10
Using their good arm to operate their new tentacle? Does anyone else not see a problem with how this new arm works, aesthetics and personal preferences aside.
qwert   12.20.10
The reason why artificial limbs imitate natural ones is simply because nature has the best designs.
Why do all kinds of b.s.designers always come up with ideas to do better than nature?

Ironically, those with a superstitious fear of change through biotec are helping to drive us toward a more mineral based (mechanical) being.

Wow, looks perfect! I am fond of design and I like this designonline essay very much, so this site is a real godsend for me!
