psychic factory: droplet traffic light

'droplet traffic light,' designed by psychic factory

a new concept project by korean design and development studio psychic factory,
'droplet traffic light' imagines a future where time spent waiting at red lights is not wasted away.

the device is modeled on the standing style of traffic light.
after turning red, the light swivels its LED displays
to project news headlines and useful information such as the weather or time.
shortly before turning green, the display switches again,
and the device returns to functioning as a normal traffic light.

the device retains an appearance similar to conventional traffic lights

nice and smooth design, but I have my strong doubts about the concept of information sharing, since we'll all be wearing smartphones in a few years time, and who will pay for these street gadgets anyway?

interesting idea, but its not clearly communicated how it would be readable for someone at a distance. i could see someone creeping up to the red light to read the screen, and what about the person that is 4 cars back? bottom line - the scale of this device needs to be reconsidered.

Have they ever even driven a car?

"what does the traffic light to?," the video asks, but they've all but destroyed the original function of the device.

This is poorly considered design.

Good intention, but bad result. Despite the fact that the object look good, how colorblind will react, what happen in winter condition, and so on. Is the weather and CNN public services?

I liked the concept. Though it needs some refining, i think its a brilliant idea to use the 1/2 min spent on traffic red lights. I think after some time (from its start), people all over will get accustomed to this & dont see chaos as feared in the other comments on this topic.

I like the form - the traffic light is certainly due for a re-design

however - it would be prone to problems with glare from sunlight and the distraction associated with the "enriched information system" could pose problematic from a traffic safety standpoint

With all due respect...dumb. When will we ever turn it off.
I wish I could drive down the highway and notice the river instead of the huge bill boards. There is a point when too much information and our brains don't have time to play.
hk   12.28.10
I agree with hk. Aside it being an interesting design, concept and what not, I think it is just another gadget that bombards us with information (unnecessary)

Oh please! would it kill you to stand a few minutes without constant "information and connection"? Try smiling at the person waiting beside you - you might make a REAL friend.

designed to reduce light pollution and urban clutter, the street lighting system eliminates the need for poles in illuminating public areas at night, relying instead on the stringing of narrow cables equipped with LEDs.
