swedish design students, emma nilsson, johanna westin and lisa frode have sent us images
of their latest project, 'på sofflocket'. the design uses traditional and contemporary techniques
to reinterpret and adapt the common kitchen sofa.

the new design offers the same functions as the traditional bench but is adapted to suit the needs
of the modern family and their way of living. the storage space located under the seat is separated into
two parts allowing for easy access and organization. the back of the bench provides further storage for books,
newspapers and magazines, reflecting the more open living spaces occurring in today's homes.

the bench is crafted out of locally produced swedish pine, indigenous to the nordic regions,
with elm wood detailing.

'på sofflocket' will be on show at the stockholm furniture fair in february 2011.

three Swedish women designing together and creating a gorgeous sofa-bench... the result is beautiful, traditional but contemporary and last but not least, practical.
Good job, girls!

What a wonderful marriage of form and function!
The individual shapes are elegant and well conceived without being fussy. The proportions seem not to refer to any earlier thing, yet the piece is inspired with a natural balance.
(a minor construction point... the connection/relationship of the back support upright and the backrest should perhaps be given a closer look, if the piece is to be made in solid wood as pictured. This area in the current version will have some cross grain expansion issues over time. a minor point in relation to what has been achieved.)
