astrum meera

astrum meera

the astrum meera is a concept proposal conceived by john baltazar, tim tsai, hussain and ali almossawi.
the car design possesses several features that tap into the role of safety, sustainability and practicality.
the exhaust of the car has built-in sensors whose purpose is to track the level of CO2 emissions,
alerting the driver when they exceed the normal limit. the wheel rims work through magnetic levitation,
like train wheels, making the car lighter and faster. the car's side mirrors retract within its body when parked,
and they roll out as soon as the engine starts. they each have a build-in camera system, allowing the driver
to clearly see outside from inside the vehicle with ease.

it is not professional at all, car design is about precise details, nice sketches...this entry not deserve to be here
dmitry   01.03.11
wow very professional, id love to see this go to production in the future...

@dmitry: hell ya it deserves to be here!
Joshua   01.03.11
The interesting thing is that all "modern" is just design. There is not any new feature about the concept of the car. The proposed design is something that every boy have in the back in his exercise-book. Really dont understand why those renderings are so interesting to see then there.
architect   01.03.11
Agreed, very conventional. Not much different than sports cars from Porsche, VW, Nissan and the Italians. Most sustainability features are already in production. And imagine climbing in and out: that's practical? Innovative personal vehicle design should attack the hard problems, not the easy aerodynamic stuff.
Mort d'Urban   01.03.11
@dmitry: Unfortunately I have to totally agree with you dmitry.

I have seen better car sketches from first year students and the final concept they chose was not the best from their sketches. The design is too clunky and the renderings need to be refined. The ride hight makes it look like a soft-roader and not very sporty at all.
This is just a series of bad decisions which intern made it fatality flawed from the start, with what could have been a good design.

You will get there with more practice and patience. Looking forward to seeing some future improvements.

Keep practicing guys.

why are rear view cameras (which could fail) an improvement over the simple, direct answer of mirrors? another case of technology getting in the way of the simple, direct, elegant approach - it's a "problem" that really doesn't require a new solution

as for the"clunkiness", there are some aspects of this that I really like - in particular that back-end that looks more like a structure than a vehicle

the front looks curiously like a Chevrolet Volt with a little Aston Martin graphic element tossed in along with Audi eyebrows... "international" style?
dbkii   01.03.11
Whoa! where on Earth did this come from? its super simple and bold! Finally, something new to look at!

hmm why do I feel like all the comments on this site are mostly from haters? and where is the chevrolet volt in it? I don't understand. you guys are weird...
riddlyu   01.03.11
Looks like somebody's been watching 'I Robot'.
Pointless retracting mirrors that point straight back at the rear side pods. No windscreen wipers. No side indicators. Difficult access for rear passengers. A rear-view mirror can be seen in pic 9 - yet look at the rear window in pic 6!!! To claim this is designed for safety and practicality perhaps some elements of safety and practicality should have been considered.
And built-in sensors tracking CO2 levels which alert the driver when they exceed the normal limit! What is a 'normal limit'? Then what? Are you supposed to park and walk to avert global warming? Seriously, what driver would really care?
Sorry, but I fail to see how is this anything more than yet another run-of-the-mill sports concept laden with pointless gimmicks.
Lombax   01.03.11
I cant see any sustainability with those large tires. Or itīs a race car that "alert the driver when they exceed the normal limit of CO2 emissions"?

The power you save with the aerodynamics, you loose in friction with those tires. Not sustainable at all...
estagiario   01.03.11
thanks for the comments guys, some make real good points, and some unfortunately don't...

as for the side mirrors question, and how it solves a problem, the main point of the cameras projecting inside the car is to 1) not roll down your windows in bad weather, which is a problem on normal mirrors and causes difficulty to see, and 2) having it project inside would keep the drivers eye always ahead...

overall the comments are good, and we're learning, we havn't been designing cars for decades in the industry, we're just a group of designers (ID/GD/Arch.) with a passion for visualizing what we imagine as a concept for the future. So as far as how something works or doesn't, thats never really looked at unless you have an engineer, or are taking it to production, and you guys should know better :)
astrum   01.03.11
what the f*** are here doing work like this? nice details, but overall look is awfull. Didn't know that beginners of transport design studies can publish thieir unfinished lowend degree projects on designboom. Thought that designboom have higher level.
miffo   01.03.11
wow very impressive... feels very futuristic and pro!! great work guys!
tmilado   01.04.11
@miffo well it seems that your taste is awful because designboom is featuring it.. owned! Go study flipping burgers at burger king...

it actually feels very futuristic, unlike the normal transport design students who make all ugly cars in the world! hahahaha! you guys are getting OWNED !!! LMAO!

Although this concept needs some more work, at least they accomplished being different and it didnt look like any other cars. I respect the designers! you guys rule! keep getting better!
kimxhu   01.04.11
Now now, children.
Kim Mawdsley   01.04.11
@Mort d'Urban - does it tell you in this article how to get in the car? no. so stop assuming that you are going to climb in and out of it.

to everyone: dont assume that you know how this car works because its not written down. Before you jump into conclusions, make sure you know what you are talking about.

"I cant see any sustainability with those large tires. Or itīs a race car that "alert the driver when they exceed the normal limit of CO2 emissions"? - does it tell you how many engines the car has or does it work on battery power? no. Again, stop assuming! Each part of the car has its own purpose, its not just put there to show what is cool to be in a car...

estagiario - "The power you save with the aerodynamics, you loose in friction with those tires. Not sustainable at all..." Again, stop assuming, What friction are you talking about? Take a look at the tires again and tell me how much friction does it create. As of now, you should know that it is floating in the air.

Please, comment wisely, you guys arent elementary students, yeah, my sketches are rough but its not my goal, my goal is the 3D model to look how imagined the car would be.

I hope I made my points clear. better concept cars coming soon. Peace out! John
John Baltazar   01.04.11
very awesome concept. i can imagine this zooming across the grid of the recent TRON: Legacy movie by Disney.

someone mentioned windshield wipers. does it really need one?

btw: to the person who called the retracting mirrors pointless; there's no such this as pointless when it comes to concepts.
CD   01.05.11
love the headlights, very solid design and work
jr   01.05.11
the design was almost "ok", until i saw the sketches. complete put off!
