'gabler' designed by paz brouk

the 'gabler' cell phone, created by industrial design student paz brouk at israel's shenkar college,
provides an efficient and unusual solution to a common problem.

ignoring the conventions of what a cellphone is 'supposed' to look like,
'gabler' clasps onto the edges of bags and pockets to provide easy access to the cell phone.

the product was designed with women in mind,
as brouk frequently noticed herself racing against time
to try to locate her cell phone in her cluttered purse.
but the versatility of the cell phone's shape gives it universal appeal,
eliminating the need for phone holsters and clips.

the key to the device's functionality is a diagonal line running along its center,
along which the phone is folded.
the flexible screen and outer shell permit the phone to be bent in both directions.

'gabler' clips easily onto purses (left) and pockets (right)

a functional cell phone, 'gabler' also features a built-in clock, calendar, address book, and camera.

Looks fantastic. Love it! But how long would that phone last in your possession hanging out of your bag or pocket on a crowded London tube train.

How can you call this original content when it's already been published by other people?
Sandy   01.13.11
the designer paz brouk sent us images of the 'gabler' project.
at the moment of publishing our article, the project had not been published yet by others,
so for us it is original content.
many of the sites who now have stories on 'gabler' have cited designboom as the original source.

80% of our material is original content that has been produced directly by us.
there are situations in which we receive exclusive material from designers
prior to others, but we cannot always determine whether or not they have also sent to others
across the globe where our time zones might be different.

exactly my point, I saw this on other blogs before you published it and many a times you guys seem to be doing this...how lame it is to call a "designers" project "your" original content, surely the designer would have published it on his/her website before you did, so technically you cant be original publishers...so stop fooling us, your readers...it is in very bad taste!

Sandy you are a dufus. there is no such thing as 100% exclusive content in today's fast-moving digital age. The majority of the time, Design Boom reports things before others, and even if you see something a little earlier on another site, these guys provide insightful comment and the designer's ethos on their posts, which gives you far greater content than many other sites. By the way, I don't work for DB, in case you think this is nepotism speaking!

sandy,
when we prepared the article two days ago,
there was nothing else online.
we published it last night. where did you see it before?
regarding your other points,
generally speaking, for magazines, one of the many definitions of
'original content' is that the publication is sent content
or additional images exclusively or in advance of others.

again, our yellow stripe usually appears for our OWN material
but can also apply to this kind of material.
we understand that readers might not always see the difference.
thank you for reading us.

Chill pill anyone?!
I guess you're right, in many cases this would not be the first place to publish something (especially taking the designers own site in account... lame argument; as I can hardly consider that a publishing media, but more a portfolio).
Content is the article and it's story, it's the property of the publisher. On this site, the content features innovative design and more often than not I find it refreshing and original. In no way do I feel the designs are misrepresented as a product of designboom. Artists / designers are always mentioned and I doubt any of them would object being featured here.
Telling you to use your time in a more productive manner, instead of bitching, seems a bit foolish as I've just wasted the same amount of time. Perhaps I should just urge you to lighten-up a little and take the opportunity to mention that I actually quite value the daily update in my in-box (I don't scout all the blogs all day).

Have a nice day,

it looks like one of those ugly bulky plastic tags they put on clothing in stores to prevent theft. blah

Ok Folks, perhaps the comments section is for comments about the products / designs? And Sandy you area dofus! But this product is not too clever either. 1. Its not an iPhone. 2. Its not an iPhone.
