anna ter haar: cinderella series

anna ter haar of the netherlands presented 'cinderella series' at imm cologne 2011.
the collection, which was recently expanded to include 'cinderella's armchair' was shown as part of
the designers fair, an extension of passagen program, that introduces the concepts and projects of
young dutch designers.

questioning the way we explore and interpret the strength of glass, the series structurally integrates
hand blown glass forms onto the arms and legs of chairs.

'cinderella's armchair' was conceived for anna ter haar's nomination in 'bernadine de neeveprijs',
an award for young designers who are working with glass in new ways.

an over-sized glass bubble props up the arm of the chair, engulfing the fragmented structure.
glass is blown directly onto the object where it settles and conforms to the volumes of the chair,
creating a piece with a visually contradictory innate strength.

'cinderella's chair', with its severed limb is given new life with a 'prosthetic' glass leg.
individually made for each object, the glass provides the otherwise identical chairs with
a unique and independent aesthetic. the glass supports are strong enough to carry
the weight of its user, something you do not expect when you see it.
these pieces that started the collection utilize chairs are simple in their form and materiality
to juxtapose their organic and vibrant glass additions.

No no no no! this is way too close to Pieke Bergmans' work.

I agree, too much Pieke in this. And her work is growing pretty stale as well. I think.
jpn   01.25.11
Yes I think so too, it is similar to Pieke Bergmans' pieces. But it is slightly different though, kind of jointed glass limbs on furniture made in wood.
Jamy   01.26.11
I am looking at this as stand-alone work like a non- designer would, regardless of other's designs. I like the contrast of materials and the synergy of simplistic, almost rectilinear chairs with the glossy curvaceous glass forms and color combos.
Most visceral to me as an amputee is the notion of prosthetic limbs implied in the structures.

I agree. Only because 1 designer did something with glass and wood, should not limit other designers to come up with their own interpretation. Great work.
