inga sempe: oesterlen chair and table for gaersnaes

österlen chair

here is a sneak preview of the österlen chair and table designed by inga sempe for gärsnäs,
to be presented during the stockholm furniture fair from 8 to 12 feb. 2011.

the recessed surfaces along the chair's back frame are designed to create a more comfortable backrest.
these cuts are repeated throughout the chair, acting both functionally to form the wood joints
and adding visual interest to the piece.

very nice!

I think the table works but the chair falls short. The detailing on every corner seems superfluous or just decorative. With such a simple & minimal chair why add decoration? Of course without the decoration, the chair looks too similar to James Irvine's reinterpretation of the cafe chair from Thonet. I'm a real Inga Sempe fan but I feel this one falls short.
